I've been thinking about how we get unstuck. Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation where we know what needs to be done, yet we can't bring ourselves to move forward. It's not a future we want, so we fight it.
If a story begins at the moment things change, being stuck is refusing to acknowledge a change, even though it’s already happened. Unfortunately, when we obsess over how unfair it is, ruminate on what should have happened, and carry on as if the old ways will still work, it doesn’t restore things to the way things were. Our new limits and circumstances are still there, we’re just in denial about them.
We don't get to decide what's true. As determined we are to resist reality, eventually we'll find it impossible to ignore. We'll stop using all our energy in the fight to travel back in time and instead we'll come unstuck. We'll start moving forward again.
Do we find ourselves ready to stop fighting reality when it's crossed a certain tipping point and become undeniable? Do we accept reality when we find a way to see hope in it? Does our resistance fade when we somehow decide we're ready to face the truth? What brings about that moment?
It’s not too late to register for the Well Spouse Association Annual Conference coming up on October 21st.
