There are patterns to the requests for advice I see in care work groups. Not only do many of us face the same issues, we approach them in certain familiar ways.
One common scenario is when someone knows exactly what they need to do. However, they don’t want that to be the right answer. So, they share their connundrum and ask us to help them come up with a solution.
Sometimes we deliberate a decision because all of the options are bad. Each option entails things we find unacceptable. So we just keep looking for more options — there must be some other not bad or less bad solution we simply aren’t clever enough to think of.
Asking people for help in coming up with some better option and getting only confirmation that there are no good options gives us the reassurance we need to move forward.
Very true!
