Do you feel valued?
If you're a professional home health aide, you get paid wages and are considered to be a contributing member of society.
If you're a family member or friend who provides unpaid care full-time, your work doesn't count under any mainstream economic measure.
Economist Arthur Cecil Pigou noted that “If a man marries his housekeeper or his cook, the national dividend is diminished.”
It makes me wonder what the world would be like if we valued things that didn't involve money changing hands.
PS. Self care is a concept that's been turned into a marketing ploy. What's your favorite act of self care that doesn't cost anything?
