Getting real about caregiving
Maybe you’ve noticed that you hadn’t heard from The Caregiver Space in a while. I was unhappy with the newsletter, so I took a break.
The newsletter felt so corporate and, while The Caregiver Space is lots of things, we're absolutely not corporate.
I wasn’t sure what to do to make the newsletter less corporate feeling without putting myself at the forefront. It’s not like I’m some expert on caregiving. Sometimes I wonder if I even count as a real caregiver.
The whole idea behind The Caregiver Space is to create space for each other. This was never supposed to be Adrienne or Bob or I broadcasting. It’s worked pretty well. Except that sometimes it seems like we’ve done such a good job of amplifying the voices of people who are ready to speak up that other voices get lost -- or shut down.
And that’s how we got to where we are now. People assume there is an organization. Yes, we’re a nonprofit, but there’s no staff and donors and army of volunteers and all of that. It’s just Adrienne, Bob, and I. With Adrienne paying the bills out of her pocket.
There’s really nothing mainstream about us.
So we’re going to be getting a little more personal. We’re here to make space and that requires putting more of ourselves out there.
Some of our most active community members may seem to have no more in common than the DNA that makes us human. What we do have in common is a belief in the essential worth of every person, a generosity of spirit, and a desire to support and be supported.
